Linux is an open-source platform and family of operating systems that is used by programmers and engineers across the world. Candidates with experience working on and developing programs for Linux are in high demand, especially in sectors where Linux is commonly used.

Linux is often used in embedded systems and devices, so at KO2 we’ve had a lot of experience understanding what is required of candidates in Linux developer jobs and how they can perform best in interviews. Researching the most common Linux interview questions and answers is a key part of this, as it helps you to be prepared for what the interview might involve and prepare answers and examples in advance that will make the process run smoothly.

In this article, we explain the main roles and responsibilities of a Linux developer and then explore some key technical Linux job interview questions and answers to help you prepare.

What is a Linux Developer?

A Linux developer is a specialist software developer or programmer who works predominantly on a Linux operating system. Linux is an open-source operating system kernel that is used in a range of operating systems, and Linux developers write code and create programs that are designed for these.

As a Linux developer, you’ll usually have a general background in computer science or software development and have developed a specialisation through working on projects that use Linux operating systems. You can write code that is compatible with Linux in a range of programming languages, such as C, Python or Java, but the Linux ecosystem is quite complex, so it’s a role that most candidates aim for after at least a few years of general programming experience.

What Does a Linux Developer Do?

Linux developers have a range of responsibilities that revolve around creating and maintaining software used by Linux operating systems. They can be employed across a variety of sectors in the engineering industry, including embedded systems which are operated by Linux.

Different industries and businesses will require developers for different tasks, such as system administration or kernel development, so what a Linux developer does day-to-day will really depend on their employer. However, some responsibilities are similar across different roles, which are listed below.

Responding to briefs for new Linux software

Adapting and improving existing software designed for Linux operating systems

Developing new software that is compatible with Linux operating systems

Debugging and refining Linux-compatible software

Creating programs and applications for Linux operating systems

Recording the development process used to create new Linux programs

Identifying and fixing issues that occur with existing Linux programs and applications

Customising existing Linux operating systems to facilitate specific tasks

Writing user guides for new Linux software

Remaining informed on new Linux updates and operating systems and adapting software to be compatible with new features

Linux developers will often work independently when they’re programming, developing software or debugging code. However, most Linux developers will be part of a team that works together on software projects, so their role will likely also involve collaborative tasks.

Linux Job Interview Questions and Answers

Depending on your level of experience, the kinds of Linux interview questions you get asked in your interview can range from simple questions about the platform and its features to specific questions about the kinds of programs you can create and how you’d go about navigating tasks or issues. Below are some common examples of the kinds of questions you might be asked in a Linux developer interview, and how to answer them.

What are some of the basic elements or components of Linux?

This basic Linux interview question assesses your general knowledge of the key elements of Linux. These include:

The shell

The kernel

The GUI

Any application programs

Various system utilities

What makes Linux different from Unix?

Unix and Linux are similar operating systems, but it’s important for a Linux developer to be able to explain the difference, and usually also why Linux is better suited for the role they’re applying for. The main difference is that Unix is proprietary, licensed software whilst Linux is an open-source platform that is free to use, presenting more flexibility and freedom to programmers.

What are two types of Linux User Mode?

This is another basic Linux interview question that gauges your understanding of the operation system. There are two primary user modes in Linux, Kernel Mode and User Mode, which you switch between if you’re performing a privileged operation or accessing hardware resources.

The default mode is User Mode which is used to run user-level applications, processes, and programs. Kernel Mode is used to execute the operating system’s kernel and gives the programmer full access to the hardware and system resources.

What is Linux Shell? What types of Shells are there in Linux?

In Linux, a shell is a program that lets you interact with the operating system through a command-line interface as an intermediary. Understanding the different types of Linux shells and their uses is important for a Linux developer, so you’ll need to be able to list several and explain when you’d use them.

Some examples of Linux shells are:

Bash – Bourne Again SHell

The default shell that is most commonly used by Linux developers because of its versatility.

Zsh – Z Shell

An extended version of bash that comes with advanced customisation and additional features

Csh – C Shell

A Linux shell that has a syntax like the C programming language, often used for interactive tasks

Fish – Friendly Interactive SHell

A particularly user-friendly shell with a simplified scripting language that includes features like autosuggestions and syntax highlighting.

What are the process states in Linux?

There are five process states in Linux that are invoked when an application needs to run. These are:

‘D’ = UNINTERRUPTABLE_SLEEP

‘R’ = RUNNING & RUNNABLE

‘S’ = INTERRRUPTABLE_SLEEP

‘T’ = STOPPED

‘Z’ = ZOMBIE

If you’re asked this question in an interview for a Linux developer job, you should be able to name some, if not all of these process states and explain the contexts in which they would be running.

Why is Linux regarded as being more secure than operating systems?

This is another interview question that investigates the candidate’s understanding of Linux and its features. In this instance, you’re being asked about the security of Linux operating systems and why they have an advantage over others, which demonstrates that you have more than just general knowledge of Linux.

Some of the reasons that Linux is regarded as more secure include the log history that allows you to see the system file specifics, the smaller number of users, the fact that only a few people have access to the systems, and the iptables feature.

What are the different modes in the VI editor used for?

Every Linux operating system comes with a text editor called the Visual Editor, or VI, which has three main modes. As a Linux developer, you should be able to explain what each of these is used for and give examples of the kinds of code you might write for each.

Regular Mode is the default mode of the text editor and should be used when you’re typing commands for specific functions. Edit Mode is used to edit text or type text into a file, and Replacement Mode stores files and command implementation, as well as running files with distinct parameters.

What is the advantage of open source?

Linux is a collection of open-source operating systems, and as a Linux developer, you’ll be expected to have an understanding of how this makes it different from other operating systems and what the advantages of open source are. You can talk about some of the general advantages, such as lower starting costs and more flexible development, or you can give your personal preferences about why you think open source is advantageous.

Advice for Candidates

In a Linux interview, you’re likely to be asked a fair amount of technical questions and will usually be presented with a technical challenge as well. It’s important to remember that being unable to answer all these questions correctly isn’t essential to doing well in the interview, as you’ll also be being assessed on how you approach solving problems and the methods you use to find solutions.

Alongside the technical assessment of a Linux developer job interview, you’ll also likely be asked more scenario-based and behavioural questions that investigate your soft skills and approach to work. When answering these Linux interview questions, it’s always a good idea to use examples to support your points and give evidence for how you’ve used skills like leadership and communication. Being able to illustrate your reasoning with past examples for questions asking how you’d respond to a work situation will also help to improve your answers.

Advice for Clients

When it comes to recruiting Linux developers for your company, you might find that some of the most talented candidates have to be sourced unconventionally. Traditional recruitment methods can be effective, but you may also want to search for experienced developers on platforms like GitHub or StackOverflow, where you’ll be able to see examples of their work.

With this in mind, also be aware that some developers do not like to share code publicly, so don’t base your assessment purely on an online profile. You can also get a good idea of a candidate’s suitability by looking at their LinkedIn profile or asking connections in your sector if they have experience working with them.

The open-source developer job market is incredibly competitive, which means that clients have to make sure they put in the effort to impress their candidates if they want to attract and retain the best employees. Throughout the interview process, make sure that you’re promoting the employment experience at your company as much as you’re vetting the applicant.

Summary

Linux interview questions might not only come up in an interview for a specific Linux developer role; you may also be asked to talk about the operating systems and associated software for general software development or programming positions. If you’re applying for a role that involves working with Linux, brushing up on your technical knowledge and preparing answers to common Linux interview questions is one of the best ways to ensure your job interview goes as well as possible.

As experts in the electronic embedded systems industry, we see plenty of companies hiring engineers and software developers with experience in C++. C++ has been a popular programming language for embedded system development for a while now, thanks to its low-level functionality and code efficiency.

However, a new programming language has been growing in popularity over the last decade that was developed as an improvement of C and C++. Rust is a modern language that has been voted the most admired programming language in the 2023 Stack Overflow Developer Survey and is regularly chosen over C++ as a safer and more efficient alternative.

When it comes to Rust vs C++, there are a lot of similarities between the two languages which means they can be used with similar positive results for a wide range of projects. However, certain features of Rust and C++ make them better suited for certain project requirements or types of program, as well as presenting different advantages and disadvantages that developers might prefer.

In this article, we compare Rust vs C++ performance, uses and efficiency to help you learn more about both programming languages and decide which is best for you.

What is the Rust Programming Language?

The Rust programming language was developed in 2010 by Mozilla, a software organisation that develops and distributes free software and standards for anyone to use. It’s a relatively modern way of coding that was initially created to overcome memory and security issues that developers faced when using C or C++.

Developers use Rust to create secure applications for a wide variety of purposes. It’s a multi-paradigm, statically-typed language that is memory-efficient and very fast, which is why a lot of people have started using it over C++.

Some of the key features of Rust include the ability to conduct different performance services, manual memory management, pattern management, move semantics and no extra runtime overhead. It’s faster to code in Rust than in languages like C, enhanced error messages make bug fixing easier, and it can integrate with other programming languages.

Rust has grown from a coding language created to overcome memory issues to one of the most popular languages used by developers all over the world. A wide variety of leading companies use Rust in their systems and programs, from Dropbox to Discord.

Advantages of Rust

Rust is considered to be one of the most secure programming languages out there, thanks to its error-prevention features and statically typed environment

The language’s memory model means that it is safe to write code around shared data structures

It’s quite easy to scale coding projects up and down with Rust, as it was designed by web browser developers

Concurrent code is easy to write without relying on synchronisation options or locks

You can give your compiler information that makes it easier for it to identify and flag bugs

High-performance code is safe to write without reliance on libraries, thanks to low-level control over system resources

Coding in Rust has the option to use a compiler that offers error messages and tooling support

Rust is considered to be a relatively ‘new’ and ‘up-and-coming’ language, which means there are a lot of exciting potential development to be made

Disadvantages of Rust

The multi-thread programming model that Rust has is generally considered to be over complicated and over-sophisticated for what developers actually need

There’s a very steep learning curve when it comes to getting to grips with Rust, so it’s not a particularly beginner-friendly language

Having to give instructions to a compiler is sometimes deemed unnecessary

What is C++?

C++ was developed between 1979 and 1983 as an extension of the C programming language. It was originally named ‘C with classes’ because it is an object-oriented language where the groups of data are usually called ‘objects’ or ‘classes’.

Developers use C++ as a general-purpose, cross-platform programming language. It supports object-oriented, procedural and generic programming and is generally a very fast and efficient language to run.

You can use C++ for writing a wide variety of code, which is why it has earned the nickname of the ‘Swiss army knife’ of programming languages. A key feature and advantage of using C++ is that it allows you to reuse code instructions that you have already written, which makes programming quicker and more efficient. You can also create ‘classes’ which perform complex functions, many of which couldn’t be done with other programming languages.

C++ is commonly used in embedded software development because of its versatility and compatibility with embedded devices. Experience programming with C++ is a desirable quality for developers that want to work with embedded systems, and it’s one that a lot of our clients are keen to hire.

Advantages of C++

You can sort data very easily with C++ because it’s an object-oriented language

Memory is managed by the program manager with C++, which offer the programmer more control

Code written in C++ is easy to reuse

The similarities between C and C++ mean that C programs written without any errors can also run as C++ programs

The portability of C++ means that it can run the same program on different operating systems and interfaces

Low-level manipulation for firmware projects is possible with C++, thanks to its similarities with machine languages

The scalability of C++ is very broad, meaning it can be used for very small or very large projects

The multi-paradigm aspect of C++ means that programmers are given a useful framework from which they can code in a range of styles.

C++ has a large community of users, meaning that there’s a lot of support and tutorials available online

Disadvantages of C++

C++ isn’t a particularly beginner-friendly programming language because the syntax is very complex

It is said to be quite difficult to get your head around using ‘pointers’ when coding in C++

Built-in code threads are not supported with C++

Object-oriented programming languages like C++ are known for having certain security issues

The object orientation system that C++ has is often considered basic, in comparison to other programming languages

Manually managing memory and not having a garbage collector feature can make the coding process longer

The Differences Between Rust Vs C++

One of the key differences between Rust and C++ is memory safety. Whilst updates have been developed that have improved the memory safety of C++ code, Rust still has much safer memory management because of its inbuilt functions for management procedures.

Another key difference is that Rust is statically-typed whilst C++ is dynamically-typed. This means that the validation process for code written in Rust is much more thorough, meaning that Rust programs are usually considered to be more secure than those developed with C++.

This improved security also tends to make Rust a better-performing language than C++. Higher safety standards mean lower development process costs, as Rust assesses the code’s viability and deals with memory issues whilst the code is compiling, not running.

On the flip side of all of these Rust advantages is the fact that C++ has been around for and used a lot longer, which means that there’s a lot more information and examples of what you can do with the code. Whilst Rust standard libraries are very good, C++ has more stable and feature-full libraries, which gives it an advantage in this sense. There are also more compilers for C++ than Rust.

C++ is an object-oriented language and Rust is not. Many people consider this difference an advantage, as C++ has features like polymorphism, templates, objects and inheritance.

Finally, whilst Rust is growing in popularity as a programming language, there are still currently more products being created using C++. Therefore, it’s easier right now to get a job as a C++ software developer than one that works primarily in Rust, although this could change in the future.

What Is the Rust Programming Language Good For?

Rust is a programming language that is ideal for embedded software development. The safety and security of the language are the main reasons for this, but its higher-level concepts are also an advantage when you’re creating programs for embedded devices. You can also use Rust for a lot of low-level software generally, as developers have a lot of control over the software they create and the run time is very fast.

Mozilla originally developed Rust, so it’s also a great language to use to build web browsers. Concurrency is a key feature of Rust, so it’s easy to run multiple computations at the same time without impacting functionality.

Whilst Rust isn’t as accessible as other programming languages, it’s generally easier to code in because it’s easier to prevent unwanted behaviour. Therefore, Rust is a great language if you want to quickly and productively write code without having to worry about memory issues or unnoticed bugs.

Rust is a very versatile language, so there’s no particular type of coding project that it’s good for. Instead, it’s perfect for any kind of task where safe code is necessary, the programs need to be able to scale up or down, and you potentially need to integrate with code written in C.

What is C++ Good For?

In the Rust vs C++ argument, C++ is still generally considered to be the best language for game development. The language is very close to the hardware that games run on, so it’s an ideal choice for complex, 3D games that run quickly and smoothly.

Any kind of object-oriented programming is better with C++, due to the functional nature of Rust. This makes C++ a better choice for large and complex coding projects that may need maintaining or updating regularly, or for collaborative projects where multiple developers work on the code at one time.

Rust’s ‘newness’ in comparison to C++ means that many developers recommend that you still use C++ when creating interactive programs, as Rust won’t work as well handling interactions from external sources. The fact that C++ has been around longer also means that, if you’re looking to do something really specific or unconventional with your code, there’s likely to be more existing support or guidance out there about C++ rather than Rust.

You can read more about what to use C++ for on our blog.

Summary

When it comes down to it, choosing between Rust vs C++ is more about the specific requirements of your projects rather than the type of program or system that you’re trying to build. Whilst Rust does have advantages over C++ that stem from why it was created in the first place, C++ has been around a lot longer and is preferred by a lot of developers because of this.

In the embedded systems sector, C++ and Rust are both used to develop embedded software, with very positive results. Rust is still in the relatively early stages of its popularity, so it’s still to be determined whether it will overtake C++ as the preferred programming language for this kind of software.

Whether you code as part of your job or just dabble as a hobby, it’s a really versatile language that can be used for everything from simple bits of code to entire pieces of graphical application software.

But despite being fast, adaptable and suitable for use on a wide range of different operating systems, there are some disadvantages to using C++ as well. It can be a pretty tricky language to get your head around if you are new to code, and some common programming projects just aren’t very compatible with this kind of object-orientated language.

In this blog post, we go over all of the advantages and disadvantages of using C++, as well as offering advice on when you should use this programming language and when another choice might be better.

What is C++?

C++ is one of the most adaptable and flexible high-level programming languages out there, originally developed by Bjarne Stroustrup who worked at Bell Labs in the United States. Stroustrup created C++ as an extension of the C programming language, seeking a new, object-orientated language instead of a procedure-orientated one.

So many programmers and software developers use C++ in their work, particularly when building graphical applications, that now it is often described as the ‘swiss pocket knife’ of coding languages. It’s a cross-platform, general-purpose language that is incredibly versatile, used to build everything from web browsers to cloud storage systems.

C++ is a compiled programming language, which means that the user is able to write code and organise data in a way that they understand. After code has been written, the coding platform or compiler translates it into a language that the computer can easily follow. This makes C++ an incredibly quick language to run, which is one of its key advantages.

Advantages of C++

C++ was created in the first place to be an object-oriented language, which makes it easier to sort data whilst writing by treating it as an object. This characteristic also means that concepts such as polymorphism, classes, and data abstraction allow the code to be reused, which saves the programmer a lot of time and can make the coding process more straightforward.

C++ is a portable programming language, so it can be used to run the same program on different interfaces or operating systems no matter what you used to write the code initially. This can be very beneficial if you are working on a coding project as part of a team and need to switch devices or allow other programmers access to your work, as it doesn’t matter what operating system they have.

Because C is a language that is relatively low-level, C++ can also be used for low-level manipulation. This can be very useful in certain projects where you need code to work well with the hardware, such as when you’re building a compiler or an embedded system.

Another of the advantages of C++ is that the links between C and C++ also mean that the two languages are pretty compatible, so any error-free C program can run as a C++ program if you need it to.

The style of C++ is multi-paradigm, which describes how the structure and procedure of the program functions and means that you can write code in different styles. As well as being object-orientated, it is also a generic language that allows you to write to-be-specified-later types of algorithms and imperative programming, which means that certain statements in the code can change a program’s state.

Because C++ is so versatile it has a massive amount of scalability and can run on a very large scale or a very small one. This is great, as once you have learnt how to use the language you can build a huge variety of different programs.

When you are coding in C++ you have control over how the memory is managed, which some programmers may see as an advantage. It works with the help of dynamic memory allocation, which uses pointers to create more efficient memory usage.

Finally, there is a large community of users who program using C++ all over the world. This means that there is a very large network of support and plenty of free tutorials and guides available online, which can be very useful when you are starting out.

Disadvantages of C++

The main disadvantage of C++ is that it is a very complex programming language to learn. If you are new to learning to code and are not familiar with any other object-orientated programming languages then it can take a very long time to understand, which limits what you can do with it to begin with.

Many people also see this difficulty as one of the main C++ limitations, as the language is pretty inaccessible unless you’re an accomplished programmer, meaning that it gets ignored in favour of other, simpler languages.

One of the key features that make C++ a distinctive programming language is the use of pointers. Whilst these are very useful, they can take up a lot of system memory which is not ideal when you’re working on large projects. Pointers can also be tricky to get your head around, and using them incorrectly can cause your whole system to crash or behave strangely, which is a major drawback.

Another of the disadvantages of C++ is that using an object-oriented programming language like C++ comes with several security issues because of features like pointers, friend functions and global variables.

Although having control of managing memory is seen as an advantage by many people, having to manually allocate memory using pointers can be very time consuming and easy to forget when you are in the middle of coding. If you’re not used to doing this then this manual memory management is a big disadvantage of C++, as there is no garbage collector feature to automatically filter out unnecessary data.

Finally, when you’re coding in C++ the language is unable to support built-in code threads. This is a key C++ disadvantage as the majority of other languages have this function, and it can make your process a lot slower and more complicated.

When Should I use C++?

As well as understanding the advantages and disadvantages of using C++, it is also very useful to know what kind of projects are best suited for the language and when it is best to use C++ to code.

First of all, bear in mind that C++ is notoriously a difficult programming language to get to grips with. If you’re already familiar and comfortable with the language then you can use it for a wide variety of different projects, but if you’re trying to learn the language before you do anything with it, you’ll probably have to set aside a lot of time before you feel confident.

However, the learning curve with coding in C++ is steep, so once you’ve mastered the basics you’ll find everything else falls into place much easier.

If you’re looking to develop software or code that runs quickly, C++ is an excellent choice because it is a pre-compiled language. Any software or program that needs speed as one of its key features is well-suited to C++, at least in part, as this will ensure that it runs quickly and efficiently.

Whilst C++ is a very versatile language that can be used for most kinds of programming projects, there are several types of projects that are particularly compatible and you should consider using C++ for.

Because of its fast speed and closeness to low-level machine languages, C++ is a great choice when you are building web browsers or operating systems. Microsoft and Linux are both built using C++, along with some elements of Apple’s iOS system.

Many coding compilers are also built using C++ as their backend language because of its low-level similarities.

These similarities to low-level hardware languages also mean that C++ is a great choice when you are creating embedded systems. Again, the fast running speed of the language is a key advantage here.

Another key type of software that C++ is particularly good for is 3D and visual design programs that are used for digital drawings, models and designs. Game development software is also commonly coded with C++, as the language works well alongside all of the complexities of an online game and can carry out multilayer networking.

Summary

C++ is one of the most popular programming languages to use for a variety of different projects and applications. Despite being a notoriously tricky language to get your head around, once you’ve mastered how to code in C++ then numerous project possibilities open up.

What makes programming in C++ simpler is using a high-quality IDE to assist with your process, easily compile your code and debug it before you take the project any further. No matter what level of experience you have, the majority of programmers use IDEs to make their process more efficient and save time when writing large or complex programs.

There are a lot of different IDEs available, all with different standout features that make some more suited for certain projects than others. Here’s our guide to some of the best IDEs for C++ programmers.

What is an IDE?

IDE stands for integrated development environment. It’s a kind of digital platform that is used to develop software, hardware and other programs and offers the programmer a range of useful features that help with this process.

Using an IDE when you’re coding saves time and increases productivity, as it offers pre-made tools and software components for writing and developing new programs that mean you don’t have to begin the process by manually configuring and integrating necessary features. IDEs can also assist when editing, compiling or debugging code, which makes the whole programming process a lot easier and more efficient.

Most IDEs have three main components; a source code editor, an automated building and compiling tool and a debugger. Within these sections, code can be automatically completed, the syntax is highlighted for efficient readability, compilation happens automatically and any errors in the code are identified before they cause problems later down the line.

Whilst some expert developers prefer to create their own IDE so that they have total control over the features, most individuals and companies choose a pre-configured IDE that is best suited for the type of work they do. The best IDE for C++ programmers to work with will be down to personal choice based on the kind of features you’re looking for and the operating systems or devices that you use.

The 11 Best IDEs for C++

How to Choose a C++ IDE

When you’re deciding what the best IDE for C++ programming is going to be for you, there are several general characteristics that vary between platforms that you should consider before making your choice.

What automated features are included?

Almost every IDE includes key three features; a code editor, build automation and a debugging system. However, certain other IDEs come with additional automated features that will benefit programmers working on certain projects, so it’s worth considering what else your IDE will automate and offer before choosing.

Does it support C++?

A key factor when it comes to deciding what IDE to use for C++ programming is whether the platform is actually compatible with the language. Some IDEs support multiple programming languages and some are geared to be better for specific ones, so it’s worth checking that C++ will be adequately supported.

How much memory does it require?

Some IDEs can take up a lot of memory, and often programmers need to be able to run other large programs on a system at the same time. Before choosing a C++ IDE, check how much memory the platform will require and whether this is going to slow down or limit what else you can do whilst you’re using it.

What operating systems does it support?

The operating system that you use will affect which IDEs you can use on your computer, unless you choose a cloud-based IDE. The operating system that your program or code is being built for can also be affected by the kind of IDE that you use, so both of these factors will need to be considered before choosing which platform to work with.

Summary

Unless you’re an incredibly experienced C++ developer, you’re probably going to use an IDE to assist with the code you write and the programs you build. Whether you’re relatively new to programming or are just teaching yourself how to code with C++, choosing an IDE that is optimised for the language and offers customisable features will make your experience a lot simpler and give you more freedom to work in a way that suits you.

However, choosing between Python or C++ is often a very difficult decision because both programming languages have very different syntaxes, uses and overall approaches to programming. Whilst C++ is considered the better choice for large system development, it’s also the hardest programming language of the two to learn and write which can limit who can use it.

If you’re an engineer or software developer wondering ‘Which programming language should I learn?’ you might end up deliberating between C++ or Python, trying to decide which is the most versatile programming language. In this article, we discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using C++ vs Python, along with highlighting the key differences between the two languages and explaining what situations or projects are best for using each of them.

What is C++?

The origins of C++ lie in the programming language known as C, which was developed in 1970. In the 1980s, Bell Labs member Bjarne Stroustrup started to develop an improved version of the C programming language that he first called ‘C with classes’, because it was an object-oriented language where the groups of data are referred to as ‘objects’ or ‘classes’. This later became the C++ that we use today.

Whilst C++ was also originally developed for coding operating systems, it is now a general-purpose, cross-platform language. It’s used for writing code in a huge variety of different contexts, supporting object-oriented, procedural and generic programming, and is so widely used it is often referred to as the ‘swiss pocket knife’ of coding languages.

On a technical level, C++ is a compiled programming language that lets the user organise data and code into a program that they can understand. The code is then translated by the coding platform or compiler into instructions that a computer can follow, which makes it a very fast and efficient language to run.

One of the main reasons why C++ is used as a programming language, and why many developers ask ‘Why is C++ better than Python?’, is because it allows users to reuse code instructions that they have already written, saving a lot of time having to write out identical functions. It also lets users combine data and instructions into ‘classes’ which can then be built out from one another to perform very complex functions that other coding languages can’t facilitate.

Advantages of C++

C++ is a portable programming language, so it can be used to run the same program on different interfaces or operating systems

C++ is a multi-paradigm programming language, so it gives programmers a framework in which they can code in a variety of different styles

C++ is an object-oriented language which makes it easier to sort data with and means that code can be reused

Because it is closely related to machine languages, C++ facilitates low-level manipulation which can be very useful in certain projects where you need code to work well with the hardware

C++ is pretty compatible with the C programming language, meaning that any error-free C program can run as a C++ program

The programmer manages memory when using C++, giving you more control

C++ is a language with great scalability, as it can run on very small and very large scales depending on the program that has been written

There is a large community of C++ users which means there is a lot of support and many free tutorials and guides out there.

Disadvantages of C++

Using pointers in C++ takes up a lot of memory and can be very difficult to get your head around

There are several security issues with using an object-oriented programming language like C++

Although having control of managing memory is seen as an advantage by many people, C++ lacks a garbage collector feature to automatically filter out unnecessary data

C++ is unable to support built-in code threads

When data points to the same place from two different starting points, the program tends to get the coding mixed up

The object orientation system in C++ is now considered quite basic in comparison to other languages

It is difficult for a beginner to try and learn how to code C++, as the syntax is very complex and the standard library is small

You can read our full guide on the advantages and disadvantages of C++ here.

What is Python?

The programming language known as Python was originally developed in 1991 by Dutch programmer Guido van Rossum. He started working on the language as a holiday project to begin with, building on the syntax of the ABC programming language but removing all of the drawbacks of this to create something new that provided good code readability and advanced developer productivity.

Python is also a cross-platform, object-oriented programming language that is high level, interactive and has dynamic semantics. Two of its most standout features are dynamic typing and dynamic binding, which make it a very popular choice for rapidly developing applications.

In its basic form, Python is used as a scripting and automation language. As well as being used for complex application development, it is also a language that is used to ‘glue’ existing components in a code or piece of software together. A stand-out feature is that the syntax is very easy to read, which makes it easy to learn and makes maintenance and debugging quite easy to do.

Is Python worth learning? Definitely. Python is one of the most versatile programming languages that is also relatively easy to learn and use without any other coding experience, which makes it one of the world’s most popular programming languages.

Advantages of Python

Python was designed to improve your productivity when you’re coding, so it’s a really good language to use if you want to work quickly and effectively

Python is known as being one of the easiest programming languages to learn and use no matter what your level of experience is

Python programmers don’t need to worry about declaring variables or data types because it is dynamically typed and automatically assigns the data type during execution

Python is an interpreted programming language, so the code is executed line by line and if an issue is found then the whole thing stops running and reports that an error has occurred

Like C++, Python is a very portable language and can be easily run on a variety of different platforms and programs

The standard library of Python is massive, which means that you can find the majority of coding functions without having to use an external library

Disadvantages of Python

Because Python executes its code line by line, it tends to be quite slow to run

Python is generally used as a server-side programming language. It’s not very efficient in mobile computing and browsers because it tends to be quite slow

Although Python is very simple to use and write, this simply means that it uses a lot of memory which can be a drawback if you’re looking for efficiency

In comparison to other technologies, Python’s database is quite underdeveloped and not very easy or satisfying to interact with

Python code needs to be thoroughly tested before it can be used properly, as runtime errors are common and the data types of variables can change at any time

What are the differences between C++ and Python?

One of the basic, written differences between Python and C++ is that C++ needs curly brackets and semicolons to work, whereas Python works by the indentation of code to create the structure. Python also sees the end of a line as the end of a code statement, whereas in C++ a semicolon indicates this.

Another key difference in writing code in C++ or Python is that C++ is statically typed, whereas Python is a dynamically typed language. This means that whilst using Python you don’t have to indicate the type of the object which makes it much more versatile.

Something to consider in this programming languages comparison is that Python offers automatic memory management to its users, so you don’t have to handle the memory you use directly. C++ in comparison requires manual memory management, which can either be an advantage or disadvantage depending on what kind of program you are developing.

When it comes down to running the code you write with these two languages, Python runs through an interpreter line by line whereas C++ is pre-compiled. This means that C++ is much faster to run, which can be a key advantage over Python for many users.

Error handling in C++ is easier than it is in Python, as you have to declare the data type when you begin using it with C++. However, the code you write in Python is shorter and easier to maintain because you don’t have to declare its type at the start, which has its advantages.

In terms of usability, the differences are quite stark between the two programming languages. Python’s syntax is a lot closer to English and so it is easier to read and write, making it the simplest type of code to learn how to write and develop with. The readability of C++ code is weak in comparison and it is known as being a language that is a lot harder to get to grips with.

If you’re already familiar with C++ then you will probably find Python quite easy to learn as it is a lot simpler and requires less research and practice to use. In comparison, the jump from learning Python to learning C++ is quite significant, which is why most engineering and computing students are taught Python first.

Should I use C++ or Python?

When it comes down to it, choosing between Python or C++ will usually depend on what kind of software or program you are looking to develop. C++ is commonly used in embedded systems, 3D and visual design programs, game development and building operating systems or web browsers and portals. Python is a scripting language that is better being used in machine learning contexts, data analysis and backend web development.

If you need to rapidly prototype a program then you should use Python over C++, as the latter cannot be used for rapid prototyping because of the large size of its code. If you’re looking to develop software or code that runs particularly quickly however, use C++ over Python as the former is much faster no matter what you’re using it for.

When it comes to choosing a programming language, you should also use the one that is most suited to your level of expertise. If you’re just choosing which to learn, it is recommended that you start with Python before trying your hand at using C++, as it’s a much more beginner-friendly language that you can easily build on over time.

Summary

If you work or study in the software and programming industry then C++ and Python are two languages that you are likely to come across, often considered to be the best programming language for software development. Understanding the key differences between them and what kind of projects each is better suited to can be very useful when it comes down to choosing the right approach to new development or analysis tasks and deciding which will be the most beneficial to hone your skills in.

All kinds of programmers use C++ to write code and build programs, whether it’s part of a work project or just as a hobby. Because the language is so versatile, you can use it for tasks that range from the very simple to the incredibly complex.

No matter what stage of understanding and experience you’re at, here are some of the best things you can do using C++.

What is C++?

C++ is a high-level programming language that is so widely used, it is often referred to as the ‘swiss pocket knife’ of coding languages. It was first designed as an extension of the C language, but is now a standalone language that is one of the most popular styles of programming for graphical applications.

C++ was also originally developed for coding operating systems by a man called Bjarne Stroustrup working at Bell Labs in the United States. It is now a general-purpose, cross-platform language that is one of the most flexible programming options out there and used across the world for everything from basic code to complex computer programs.

What is C++ Used For?

C++ is used for writing code in a huge variety of different contexts, supporting object-oriented, procedural and generic programming. The language lets the user write code in a format that they can understand and then the coding platform or compiler translates all of this into instructions that a computer or device can follow.

One of the main reasons why C++ is used as a programming language is because it allows users to reuse code instructions that they have already written, saving a lot of time having to write out identical functions. It also lets users combine data and instructions into ‘classes’ which can then be built out from one another to perform very complex functions that other coding languages can’t facilitate.

This versatility means that C++ can be used to write almost anything that runs on a computer, as long as the programmer knows what they are working towards and has a platform or device that the finished program can run on.

Examples of What You Can Do With C++

As you can see from the list below, the breadth of projects and programs that can be built using C++ is massive. Here are some of the most common examples.

Animation

Animation has come a really long way in the past few decades, which is mostly down to the complexity and versatility of the programming languages that are used. What used to be basic 2D manipulation now uses 3D technology, rendering, simulation technology and modelling to make graphical animation look as realistic as possible.

A lot of animation software is built by programming in C++ at the backend to support more complex functions and also so that animation programs can run on computers that may not be as advanced or have a lot of power.

Billing Systems

Nowadays, very few regular billing systems still operate by sending paper copies of payment requests or confirmations. Instead, e-billing systems have been set up to automate the process and make paying for everything from heating to subscription boxes a lot easier.

Many of these billing systems are created using source codes written in C++ that sync user’s online payment details to the accounts they are paying, as well as sending notifications when a payment is requested or received.

Cloud Storage Systems

Cloud storage systems are used by some of the biggest companies in the world, and almost everyone will come into contact with a device that connects to a cloud at some point when it is used. C++ is used a lot when building these kinds of systems because it is such a versatile language, which means that it is compatible with multiple kinds of devices and hardware.

Libraries and databases that are cloud-based are also a popular choice because they have high concurrency and load tolerance; essential features of a system that deals with a lot of different data.

Compilers

The compilers for a range of different programming languages are usually built using C or C++ as their backend languages. This is because they are both relatively simple, lower-level languages that tend to be closer to the hardware that is running them, and therefore they work better than others and can more easily work with underlying hardware resources in compilation systems.

Databases

The C++ programming language is commonly chosen to develop general database software and open-source databases. Databases are used in almost all of the programs, online platforms and channels that we use in our day-to-day lives, and the majority have their backend written in C or C++.

The reason that C++ is often chosen is that it is relatively simple, meaning that the databases coded with it are fast, efficient and easy to access.

Dating Apps

A variety of applications are written using C++, but an excellent example that a large majority of the population use is dating apps. These kinds of applications require a huge amount of data to be stored, sorted through and accessed by a large number of users, so having the software foundations written in a simple language like C++ means that they effectively run and can handle a large number of users online at a time.

Embedded Systems

Embedded software engineers and developers work with a huge array of different devices, from medical machinery to smart devices and home appliances. Inside these devices are microprocessors that perform multiple calculations and functions whenever they are used and require a simple and fast language to run on.

C++ is commonly used when writing programs for an embedded system because it is a language that is very similar to the hardware level and can perform a lot of low-level functions quickly and without taking up a lot of system space.

Game Development

Just like C++ is a common part of animation technology, it is also becoming very popular as the programming language used to build game design programs and run digital games themselves. Because of features like the language’s closeness to the hardware it runs on, its fast speed and the range of functions that it can perform, C++ works well alongside all of the complexities of a 3D game and can carry out multilayer networking.

Graphic Design

Graphic design is used by artists, designers and creatives worldwide for everything from company logos and official infographics to fanart and doodles. Programs used for graphic design perform a huge range of different functions that require speed and versatility from the software they run on, which is why C++ was used to develop software like Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.

Media Libraries

Despite the renewed popularity of analogue forms of media like vinyl, cassettes and film cameras, the majority of people still rely on media libraries to access audible and visual content. Platforms like Netflix and Spotify require a large number of video and audio files to be shared and accessed by users in a wide geographic area, and use C++ to code and store all of these files so that they can deliver media quickly and easily to their users.

Management Systems

Many companies use online systems and platforms to manage their employees, keep data together in one place and automate internal processes to help their business run more efficiently. These systems can be built using C++ source code and all the different functions and blocks available in the IDE libraries to personalise what needs to be managed and what you would like to have access to easily.

C++ can also be used as the backend language to build employee management portals used for tasks like booking holiday, checking availability and viewing multiple calendars and to-do lists.

Operating Systems

One of the best-known uses for C++ is programming operating systems. Well-known systems like Microsoft and Linux are all developed in C++ because it is a language that is strong and fast to code in, making it ideal for building an operating system right from scratch.

Programming in C++ is also used when developing mobile software, with the most notable example being Apple who use the language to write some of the iOS system.

Rental Systems

Libraries and databases written in C++ can cover a huge geographic area and connect a vast number of users at once, making the programming language the ideal choice when developing applications or platforms that deal with rentals or transportation like taxis.

Security Systems

Security systems using features like facial recognition and biometric authentication are growing in popularity with places like airports, and C++ can be used to develop this kind of technology. The huge libraries that the programming language can access and work from is ideal for quickly accessing information or finding matches, and a lot of the systems developed in the future will likely use C++ in their backend.

Smart Technology

One of the key benefits of using C++ is that it is a language that works really well with hardware because of the similarities between the two. It’s a really good language for combining hardware devices that work with IoT to software that helps this smart technology run efficiently, as well as being a great language to use to create more features in the embedded systems that things like smartwatches use.

Web Browsers

C++ is frequently used to build operating systems, and it is the same features of the language that also make it a really popular choice for developing web browsers. The rendering engines of famous browsers like Chrome and Firefox require really fast speed to deliver the information users are searching for in an instant, which is why low-latency C++ is used.

3D Visuals

3D animation used in films, games and television is often created with applications that are primarily written in C++. These programs need to handle huge amounts of data at a time and run multiple functions at once, so a language like C++ saves time by helping the whole program to run as efficiently as possible.

Summary

C++ is a coding language that takes a while to get your head around, but once you are confident programming with it then a range of different possibilities open up as to what you can build. Having experience with a range of different C++ projects will be very beneficial if you are looking to work as a programmer, software developer or software engineer, and the above list is a good place to start if you’re looking for the different things you can do using C++.

Almost every digital and electronic device or product that we use relies on some kind of code. Technology and programming knowledge have both come a very long way since the very first kinds of programming languages were developed, but the function of code and the intention behind the creation of these languages remains the same.

C++ is one of the most adaptable and flexible high-level programming languages out there, used to create a huge variety of different programs and applications. If you’re a software or embedded systems engineer, a developer or a systems analyst, C++ is an incredibly useful language to be able to use. And if you’re a business owner who employs any of the aforementioned roles, hiring staff who can program in C++ could do wonders for the efficiency of your team and the products or systems you supply.

Introduction to C++

C++ is a high-level programming language that is so widely used, it is often referred to as the ‘swiss pocket knife’ of coding languages. It was first designed as an extension of the C language, but is now a standalone language that is one of the most popular styles of programming for graphical applications.

Whilst C++ was also originally developed for coding operating systems, it is now a general-purpose, cross-platform language. Commonly used to programme applications that run in Windows or Macintosh environments, it’s one of the most flexible language options out there that is used across the world for everything from basic code to complex computer programs.

What is C++ Used For?

C++ is used for writing code in a huge variety of different contexts, supporting object-oriented, procedural and generic programming. On a technical level, the language lets the user organise data and code into a program that they can understand, and then the coding platform or compiler translates this into instructions that a computer can follow.

This means that C++ can be used to write almost anything that runs on a computer, as long as the programmer knows what they are working towards and has a platform or device that the finished program can run on.

History of C++

The origins of C++ lie in the programming language known as C, which was developed by Brian Kernighan and Dennis Ritchie in 1970. C was created for writing operating systems code using simple procedure-oriented language and was an incredibly popular coding language at the time.

The only issue with C was the fact that, because it was procedure-oriented, programmers had to first describe the data when coding and then write procedures to manipulate it, which was quite time-consuming and confusing. To solve this problem, a new method of object-oriented coding emerged that grouped data together with operations that worked on them.

In the 1980s, a man called Bjarne Stroustrup working at Bell Labs in the United States started to develop an improved version of the C programming language that he called ‘C with classes’. This was because it was an object-oriented language, where the groups of data are also referred to as ‘objects’ or ‘classes’.

Stroustrup wanted a new type of code that was fast and efficient but could also produce complex, high-level features that could be used in large software development projects. The C++ programming language was born from his work, allowing data to be organised and processed much better than the majority of other languages.

Since its original development, the C++ language has been updated and refined to include new features that improve the code and what you can do with it.

C++11

The biggest update to the C++ language was C++11, so-called because it was released by ISO in August 2011. The update changed the way that you could write code in C++, making it much easier and more streamlined, and came with lots of new features in its library that expanded what could be achieved with the code and how efficiently it could be used.

Some of the most important new features that were included in the C++11 release were ‘auto’, which allowed the user to spend less time having to write things that the compiler already knew, ‘static assert’ which can be used to add conditions to template parameters, and four new unordered containers.

C++14

C++14 was the next update of the C++ code after the massive 2011 release, including fewer new features than the previous release but still bringing something new to the code. The intention behind the additions on the 2014 update was to help make the language more beginner-friendly, focusing on improving how lambda functions could be written, relaxing restrictions on ‘constexpr’ functions and allowing return type deduction for all functions.

C++17

In 2017 the C++ standards were updated again with C++17, another update with fewer new features than C++11 that still brought quite a few improvements to the code. This update was released to help users to write cleaner code and to improve the safety and security of programs or applications that were created using programming in C++.

C++20

The most recent update to C++ was in 2020 with C++20, a relatively new release of standards and features for the coding language. Some of the new features include a standardized mechanism for code reuse known as a ‘module’, coroutines that suspend a function’s execution and return control to the caller without the function losing its state, and ‘range’ features that let users filter data.

With new code updates expected every 3 years, users can decide whether they want to move to the updated versions or keep using the code they are familiar with. Although it can take time to learn how to use new functions or change the way that you write, it is useful to keep updated with the latest version of C++ so you can reap the benefits of each newest version.

What can you do with C++?

C++ is one of the most versatile programming languages out there, meaning that there are a huge variety of different things you can do once you have mastered writing the code.

Common uses for the language include:

Building applications based on a graphic user interface

Creating software used in animation programs for things like 3D modelling, simulation and rendering

Developing web browsers, specifically their rendering engines

Creating media players that manage both video and audio files

Programming game development engines

Supporting graphics applications that perform rendering and image processing

Building operating systems, with Microsoft being the most common example of a system that uses C++

Programming embedded systems that are used in medical devices, engineering technology and smart, wearable tech

Programming compilers that translate other coding languages

In order to use C++, you will need to learn how to write and use the code. If you study a subject at a higher education level that involves programming or coding then it is likely that you will be taught how to program in C++ early on in your degree, along with other commonly used languages.

It is also very easy to teach yourself coding in C++ by following tutorials or taking part in online workshops and training courses. It may take some time to get the hang of, especially if you are new to coding, but is an incredibly versatile language that you can do a lot with once you have mastered it.

Before you start learning and using C++, you’ll need a text editor to write the code and a compiler to translate your code into a language that your computer can understand. There are a variety of different code compilers available, but you can use something as simple as the Notes application on your computer to start writing the code.

Another option for starting programming in C++ is to use an integrated development environment (IDE) in which you can both edit and compile the code. Microsoft Visual Studio is a very popular choice, but there are also good options on Linux and Apple operating systems and devices.

C++ is notoriously a bit of a difficult programming language to learn, but the learning curve for many people also tends to be steep. Once you’ve mastered the basics it is easy to start writing more complex functions, and there are thousands of tutorials out there to help keep expanding your knowledge.

Frequently Asked Questions About C++

How long does it take to learn C++?

For most people, it takes an average of 2-3 months to get a basic grasp of the C++ programming language and be able to start writing code in it. It’s quite a complex language to get to grips with initially, so the amount of time it takes to learn will also depend on how familiar you are with programming and other languages.

Who invented C++?

The inventor of the original programming language that we now call C++ is Bjarne Stroustrup, who began working on it back in 1979 as part of a PhD thesis. C++ is an extension of the C programming language, which was invented by Dennis Ritchie, so many people often get the two inventors confused.

What is the difference between C++ and C#?

C# and C++ are two variants of the same programming language. The biggest difference between the two is that C++ is an object-oriented language whilst C# is a component-oriented programming language.

What is Microsoft Visual C++?

Microsoft Visual C++ is a computer program that translates programming code from one language to another and can be used with the C, C#, and C++ programming languages. It’s part of the Microsoft Visual Studio program now but was originally a standalone piece of software.

What is polymorphism in C++?

The direct translation of polymorphism means to have many forms and allows code classes to perform a single action in different ways. There are two main types of polymorphism in C++; compile-time and runtime polymorphism which rely on function overloading and function overriding respectively.

Summary

The best way to understand C++ as a programming language is to start writing code in it and see for yourself how it operates. Whether you work in the game development industry, build graphical user interface applications or write the code that is used to create web browsers and online databases, if you haven’t heard or used C++ we strongly recommend that you give it a go and see what you can do with it.
